"You are a cybersecurity expert" asked about a CVE from yesterday won't produce accurate information; it will produce confident-sounding guesses about the CVE. The actual fix for hallucination is grounding: paste real source material and constrain the model to use only that information. Role prompting and grounding are complementary — role shapes how the knowledge is applied; grounding supplies the actual knowledge. Use both, or use neither; using role alone for factual questions is risky.
From Expert Roles to Expert Systems #
Role prompting is the foundation. Once you can reliably pull expert-level output from a single prompt, the next move is to stop typing it by hand. Good role blocks want to become templates. Templates want to become libraries. Libraries want to become automations.
